A State University established by upgrading Gurucharan College under Assam Act No. LVII of 2023.

Gurucharan University, formerly known as Gurucharan College, stands as a historic pillar of higher education in Southern Assam. Established on July 15, 1935, the institution was born out of the vision and dedication of late Gurucharan Nag, after whom the college was named. Since its inception, it has been a beacon of learning, catering to the educational needs of a vast population across the Barak Valley and neighboring states.
For over eight decades, the institution functioned as a premier college, initially affiliated with Calcutta University. It later came under the jurisdiction of Gauhati University in 1949 and subsequently Assam University, Silchar, in 1994. Throughout its journey, the college has produced countless scholars, leaders, and professionals who have made significant contributions to society. Its legacy is built on a foundation of academic excellence, inclusivity, and community service.
A monumental chapter in its history began with the passing of the Assam Act No. LVII of 2023, which officially upgraded Gurucharan College into a State University. This transformation into Gurucharan University marks a new era of autonomy and growth. It opens up new avenues for research, innovation, and specialized courses, empowering the institution to better serve the aspirations of the youth in the region.
Today, Gurucharan University continues to uphold its rich heritage while embracing modern educational standards. With its sprawling campus, dedicated faculty, and vibrant student community, it remains committed to its mission of molding responsible citizens and fostering intellectual growth in an ever-evolving world.
