His Excellency Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya is the 32nd Governor of Assam and serves as the ex-officio Chancellor of Gurucharan University. He assumed the office of Governor on July 30, 2024, bringing with him a distinguished career in politics, social service, and education.
As Chancellor, His Excellency presides over convocations, confers degrees upon graduates, and provides overall direction to the university's academic and administrative affairs. He serves as the ceremonial head of the institution and ensures that the university maintains its commitment to excellence in higher education.
Born on October 3, 1954, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Acharya hails from a lower-middle-class family. His parents were the late Shri Kalidas Kharwar and the late Smt. Pyari Devi. He is married to Kumud Devi and has a daughter.
Shri Acharya completed his early education at Saraswati Shishu Mandir. He is recognized as a Sahitya Ratna in Hindi, reflecting his deep commitment to education and literature.
Shri Acharya began his career in 1973 as a teacher at Bhartiya Shishu Mandir in Ramnagar, Varanasi. Driven by a passion for education and social welfare, he initiated the groundbreaking "Child Education in the Village" (शिशु शिक्षा गांव की ओर) campaign on June 22, 1977.
Notable Achievement: First person to open private primary schools in villages in Eastern Uttar Pradesh
Became a volunteer (swayamsevak) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early in his life, laying the foundation for his political journey.
